The Marvelous Toy Review

"The Marvelous Toy" is poetry, art and music, all three, aimed at the hearts of the young and the once young. Most adults over the age of 21 will be familiar with the popular folk song about a boy whose father brought him the marvelous toy that went "zip when it moved, bop! when it stopped, and whirr! when it stood still." Tom Paxton's beloved song has now been cunningly illustrated and brought to life again as a wonderful children's book and CD, containing three other songs as well ("Let the Wild Wind Blow, All the Children," and an instrumental arrangement of "The Marvelous Toy" in addition to the vocal rendition of the same song, all performed by Tom Paxton). "The Marvelous Toy," book, art, and CD, should appeal to children preschool age and older, and will always have a special place in the hearts of the young at heart, no matter what their age.

When I was just a wee little lad / Full of health and joy, / My father homeward came one night / And gave to me a toy----"" For nearly half a century, ""The Marvelous Toy""composed by the legendary singer/songwriter Tom Paxtonhas enchanted children and adults alike. A simple tale about a mysterious, magical, and mystical toy that a father gives to his sonand that eventually gets passed down to the next generationit celebrates a childs sense of wonder. The witty, evocative lyrics spark the imagination. No surprise, then, that the song has been recorded by countless major artists, from Peter, Paul, and Mary to the Chad Mitchell Trio to John Denver, and won legions of fans through the years. Paxtons marvelous song has finally become a stunning picture bookoversized, wonderfully packaged, and complete with a CD offering three songs sung by Tom himself plus a music-only version of ""The Marvelous Toy"" to sing along with. Featuring incredible and wildly imaginative art by Steve Cox, illustrator of the award-winning Pigs Might Fly, the story is now as amazing to look at as it always has been to listen to. Parents, grandparents, friends, and family will remember this classic from their own youthand joyfully share it with their own children. Coleridge, Language and the Sublime: From Transcendence to Finitude Review

Coleridge, Language and the Sublime: From Transcendence to Finitude

For Coleridge fans, and Romanticists more generally, Stokes' book is a must read. He challenges traditional "positive" v. "negative" romanticism dichotomy, and argues for what he calls Coleridge's "fragile sublime," which positions Coleridge in the liminal space between transcendence and finitude (I am going quickly as this is only an Amazon review :)). I think Stokes is right in his primary thesis, and he offers excellent readings of a number of Coleridge's poems to evidence his theory that there was a chronological development from transcendence to finitude. One question that is still worth asking, however: to what extent does Stokes' notion of "finitude" become "transcendence" by other means (namely, as withdrawal, prayer, givenness, etc.)? So: a more sophisticated transcendence as finitude in the form of faith grounded on mystery of existence? This is not a counter to Stokes, but a response to what I think he is getting at in this book. I really loved that Stokes brought Nancy and Derrida and Heidegger into the discussion, as Coleridge presages all three of these thinkers, even though he is neglected by comparison. All of this should change with the recent flood of excellent works on Coleridge (Milnes, Berkeley, Hamilton): add Stokes to the list! This is a great study. Bravo!

Traversing the themes of language, terror and representation, this is the first study to engage Coleridge through the sublime, showing him to have a compelling position in an ongoing conversation about finitude. Drawing on close readings of both his poetry and prose, it depicts Coleridge as a thinker of "the limit" with contemporary force.

This Little Piggy Went to Prada: Nursery Rhymes for the Blahnik Brigade Review

This Little Piggy Went to Prada: Nursery Rhymes for the Blahnik Brigade

I received this book as a gift when my third child was born.
It is spectacular and wonderfully witty. My personal belief is that the reviews that cite it as mediocre and such are missing the point - this is a book that is fun for mom *and* fun for the kiddies.
You won't find duckies and bunnies here - but you will find a wonderful play on nursery classics that appeals to the fashion-loving mom and her hip kiddos.
And yes, the author is British. Therefore some of the references are British - makes perfect sense to me. That added a welcome level of complexity to the discussion with my 4 year old about how certain words in the same language might be used differently in different places.
I love this book - and I know many adults sans kiddos who would love it as well.

My son, Luke, who is in Kindergarten this year loves this book! He laughed so hard at the boy who picks his nose all the way through the book, no matter what he is doing. The teacher is lovable and makes you want to hug your own child's teacher after reading this. Singing the tune makes it even more fun and has your child singing with you by the end! If your child is getting ready for Kindergarten, this book has some fun ideas of how it may be on any given day.

Musical Theatre: A History Review

Musical Theatre: A History

I've been hooked on musicals since I saw my first one on Broadway back in the 1960's. It's obvious that John Kenrick is even more so. His knowledge and expertise on this art form clearly comes through in his conversational writing style. The who, when, where, what, why and how of the various musicals through the ages are truly informational gems. This is a great book that allows the reader to peek behind the curtain while studying musical theatre's evolution. It is a great source book for those of us who aren't in musical theatre and wish to test our knowledge of what we have seen or know; as well as to track down totally unfamiliar musicals and discover what's been missed. I always thought of the musical as having come into existence in the last 100 or so years. Boy was I wrong! "Musical Theatre-A History" is an excellent read and reference!

I can't believe this things has gotten ANY good reviews.
Okay, it's a decently made video, alright presentation, easy to pick up on the licks, the on-screen tablature is great...
BUT I never got past Misirlou (the first song on the tape) because... it's not Misirlou. The video instructs you to play the song in the wrong SCALE. If you listen to a Dick Dale recording of this song and then watch the tape, you will laugh yourself off your stool.
It's wrong. You can find a tab transcription book with this song and see for yourself that it's wrong.
[opening lick actual notes: bottom string 0,1,4,5,7,8,11,8,7 and on the video: 0,3,4,5,7,10,11,8]
Waste of ten bucks.

Chinese and English Nursery Rhymes: Share and Sing in Two Languages

I purchased this book and CD combo while waiting to adopt our little 3 year old girl from China. I was hoping it would create some security for her, hearing her native language amongst such new and strange surroundings, but what I didn't expect was the impact it would have on our whole family! We've had a lot of fun learning to sing the songs! The book has the Chinese characters, the pinyin writing and the English words for each Chinese song. (The English nursery rhymes just have English words.) Before listening, I was afraid the lyrics might be overpowered by the music therefore making it hard to understand. This wasn't the case! The lyrics are very clearly sung with just enough acoustic guitar as background music. This is such a wonderful resource, I'd recommend it to anyone, not just families who have or are going to adopt. It would make a great gift for any family that appreciates culture and open to learning different languages. I only wish there was a set of these!

The Rainforest Grew All Around Review

The Rainforest Grew All Around
Yum, a rainforest cookie recipe, informative sidebars, and luscious illustrations, make this lovely book a keeper! The text by author Susan K. Mitchell is a cumulative rhyme that takes the reader through life in the rainforest from giant trees to tiny insects and frogs. It highlights both plants and animals.
Connie McLennan's illustrations are both rich and informative. Children will enjoy the variations of subject and texture in the paintings, perhaps discovering small plants and insects not mentioned in the text. The book is a marvelous blend of text and illustration. Besides the recipe there are two matching games at the back. The verse is adapted from the old English cumulative folk song, "The Tree In The Wood." Children ages 3 to 7 will delight in this book, which will be enjoyed for years to come in both home and classroom libraries.

This wide-ranging study investigates the intersections of erotic desire and dramatic form in the early modern period, considering to what extent disruptive desires can successfully challenge, change, or undermine the structures in which they are embedded. Through close readings of texts by Marlowe, Shakespeare, Webster, Middleton, Ford, and Cavendish, Haber counters the long-standing New Historicist association of the aesthetic with the status quo, and argues for its subversive potential. Many of the chosen texts unsettle conventional notions of sexual and textual consummation. Others take a more conventional stance; yet by calling our attention to the intersection between traditional dramatic structure and the dominant ideologies of gender and sexuality, they make us question those ideologies even while submitting to them. The book will be of interest to those working in the fields of early modern literature and culture, drama, gender and sexuality studies, and literary theory.

The Oxford Companion to Italian Literature Review

The Oxford Companion to Italian Literature
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In terms of content this Companion sits comfortably alongside the rest of the Oxford series for scholarship and the other qualities we customarily associate with this publishing house. However, that's where the story ends. In terms of the quality of publication you might expect to pick it up cheap on a news-stand or as a quick and inexpensive reprint in a remainder store. Oxford Companions usually come cloth-bound with dust-jacket, signature-sewn on acid-free paper and are a pleasure to handle. The current (US) 2006 reprint, "printed digitally[and poorly at that]...in order to ensure its continuing availability" (?), has a gloss, cardboard cover with the dust-jacket image printed on it, is perfect-bound (so the pages will eventually drop out), and is on mediocre, non-acid-free paper. I have never seen a poorer quality product from Oxford at this end of the scale: I believe it is totally unacceptable. And the 1st. ed. is apparently still available. Shame on Oxford UP Inc., New York.

Cinderella: The Love of a Daddy and His Princess Review

Cinderella: The Love of a Daddy and His Princess
Average Reviews:

I was driving down the road a few days ago and heard the song "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman for the first time. I have been a fan of Steven Curtis Chapman for a long time. He has written and recorded several songs that grasp us and remind us of the importance of love and family. "I Will Be Here" has become one of the best wedding songs of all time.
I moved from Florida to Tennessee a few months ago and my 11 year old daughter lives with her mother in Louisiana. Hearing this song reminded me of how much I miss my daughter and how much I have missed in her life by living apart from her. Unfortunately this is a result of marital divorce. Divorce changes everything and takes your life down paths that are usually far from ideal.
The song "Cinderella" reminds us of the love our little girls need from their fathers and how they seek love, attention, and affirmation from us. I couldn't listen to it without weeping in my car. It is a heart gripping song with an important message. A message that tells us to love and admire our little ones because they will grow up and be gone before you know it. Time passes faster than we can ever imagine.
This little book captures the story in the song and is filled with great pictures (including many pictures of Steven Curtis Chapman and family). Even better is the fact that the song "Cinderella" is included on cd in a plastic pouch on the inside back cover for you to listen to whenever you desire.
This is a wonderful book to buy and either have as a keepsake or give as a gift for Father's Day as a reminder to love our little girls as much as we can before they are grown and leave home.

As the clock strikes midnight, remember . . .

Each moment we have to spend with our children is a blessing from above. But as we cherish this chapter of life, we realize the pages of time will keep turning. Alternating between the voices of a father and his daughter, Cinderella celebrates the blessings of childhood, family, love and life. You will be enchanted by this modern fairytale that teaches us how to hand our own Cinderella her glass slippers and let her go.

Progressive Rock Reconsidered (Composer Resource Manuals) Review

Progressive Rock Reconsidered (Composer Resource Manuals)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The more you appreciate and enjoy music, the more it becomes incumbent upon you to understand music in terms beyond the social context, beyond "I like it" or "I don't like it". The arts are generally forgiving to lay people: you need not understand the references, the structures, the variations, the sources or the traditions. Which is a long way of saying, you don't need to understand much.
Unless you really want to enjoy what you're listening to.
This book brings together a generous spectrum of opinion on music and the battered category of Progressive Rock. I have been drawn to aspects of this musical "form" for many, many years. And while Prog includes its share of ostentatious and overblown nonsense, it also offers some genuinely original, powerful and moving music.
The positive attributes of this music are best exemplified by Gregory Karl in his analysis of King Crimson's "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" . Here at last is a lucid and insightful essay which clearly connects the music itself with its accompanying subtexts. Mr. Karl does an outstanding job of tracing the elements of the score and structure forward and backward in the King Crimson catalog to make an intellectual connection between sound and meaning. John S. Cotner's analysis of Pink Floyd's "Careful with that Axe, Eugene" is interesting in its attempt to take us through a new system of notation for a new kind of compositional technique. And there are several other essays ranging from lyrical analyses of works by Roger Waters and Adrian Belew, to the time and thematic transformation techniques of Keith Emerson, as well as other perspectives on the music of bands such as Yes and Rush.
These essays may seem dry and overly scholastic in some cases, but an untrained reader needs to look beyond the immediate and sometimes significant challenge of dealing with music theory to the understanding that this music usually goes well beyond the surface characteristics of sound and song to something more profound. In fact, if you like this musical form, this book will better help you understand why you like it, even without comprehending every nuace presented by the authors.
The only topic that seems to be missing is the role of the studio in much of this music. In many cases, signal processing techniques and studio manipulation play a significant role in the resulting music. For example, the article by Mr. Cotner, which goes to such great lengths to develop a system of notation capable of dealing with the vagaries of an Echoplex, never gives a complete nod to the sometimes "experimental" and even "accidental" origin of some of these pieces -- intellect catching up with intuition, as Brian Eno has said. None-the-less, Kevin Holm-Hudson needs to be applauded for putting together a broad-ranging, thought-provoking and -- sorry for the cliche -- challenging book that should compel you to know more about what you think you hear.

There are 14 total songs to sing, to old tunes that we know and love. This is a great and engaging book, that will put a smile on any child's face. The words "silly dilly" are perfect for this book.

I was introduced to this book with its accompanying CD with Carly Simon singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," a song I suspect every American knows, when Diane Rehm interview Ms. Simon on Ms. Rehm' NPR show. It is a wonderful and quite large, colorfully illustrated book about a girl, Katie Casey, who is a baseball nut, written in poetry kids--of all ages including mine at nearly 70--love with a defined rhyme scheme and catchy phrases: "Katie Casey was baseball mad./She had the fever and she had it bad..." And then suddenly the catchy lyrics of the famous song appear. Katie Casey knew Jackie Robinson. And the book includes a little about that special relationship. And the illustrations are just so vibrant, so wonderful. For the price of this book, you can't go wrong. And what a great gift to anyone you know who loves what was once--before football became what it unfortunatley has--America's best-loved game: baseball.

Break out the peanuts and Cracker Jacks for this new spin on an American classic! Katie Casey, the baseball-loving cat, cheers on two animal teams vying for victory at Sluggers Stadium. Will Crocodile hit a home run? Or will Giraffe's wicked curve ball throw him for a loop? Whoever wins, it's sure to be a game to remember. Colorful, collage-like illustrations bring the game to life and will delight baseball fans both young and old. The unofficial anthem of baseball has never sounded or looked better than it does in this joyful edition, complete with a CD featuring the inimitable Carly Simon. This version of Take Me Out to the Ball Game was originally done for the Ken Burns PBS series Baseball. The CD also includes the songs I Gave My Love a Cherry and Scarborough Fair.
