I have not read the entire book but part of the book consists of the lyrics for the CD that is included. The CD is absolutely incredible and inspiring. It's one that is very hard to get tired of. I've given away 2 already and am ordering 2 more for other friends that want one too! Don't miss this gem. The artwork in the book is beautiful as well.

Basic Classical Guitar Method, Book 1 Review

Basic Classical Guitar Method, Book 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My background in music was almost non-existent, and I couldn't read music *at all* before buying this book. I bought it because I wanted to have some background before seeking out a classical guitar teacher. My goal is to be a musician and learn about music the right way, not follow some kooky guitar method and play phony versions of pop songs.
Well, this DVD is like having a teacher in the room with you. Almost everything my teacher told me in my first several guitar lessons were addressed in this book and DVD. Tennant doesn't cover every little nuance -- and that's where a teacher comes in -- but this method DOES WORK WELL for the totally rank beginner like myself. Even if you're sitting in a room with a TV and no instructor, you can really learn to play.
This book has kept me very busy playing and practicing for three months at least, and I am not going to be through with it for a while yet. Even when I am done and on to volume 2 I'm sure I'll still be playing pieces from this book for practice.
Best Things: Scott Tennant has a friendly style and he doesn't oversimplify or overcomplicate things. Now that I know a little bit more about learning to play classical guitar, I can appreciate the effort put into making the exercises in this book "musical". Even when you know only a few notes on one string, he has you playing a "first string polka" that sounds like music. Many other books or methods have fingering exercises that go on and on and are not very musical at all. There are a few exercises in this method that have you walking up and down the fretboard in a pedantic way, but these are brief and the material focuses on the "musical" pieces, which is much more fun.
Having the DVD is the best part of this tool. You cannot replace the experience of seeing/hearing/playing along with an experienced player. It teaches you timing and how your notes are "supposed" to sound. You could play all the exercises in this book with a cruddy, twangy tone to your notes and you'd never know it if you didn't have the CD or DVD to measure against. The DVD material along with the book is about to create a revolution in music instruction for the home, I think.
Cons: On the TV it is sometimes hard to represent notes, because staff lines are so thin, on a white background. Maybe my TV stinks, and this would look better on a computer monitor. Most of the time you can tell what the note is, but it is really better to be reading from the book ... the online music does give you a nice crutch though when playing duets with Scott.
And the binding of the book ... why isn't this book spiral bound? The book IS lightweight enough to put on a music stand, but man if it were spiral bound it would be sooo much easier. This is a small nit to pick, but publishers should know this by now. I usually end up photocopying pages out of books and putting them on my music stand, so maybe they figure most people just do that.
A big warning should come on the part of the DVD about re-stringing your guitar. He shows you how to make a single loop around the bridge, and I had a couple of nylon strings slip out of that knot while I was winding the string onto the key. One of these snapped out hard enough to scratch the surface of my guitar, which sucked. I then started twisting them a couple of times at the bridge so they wouldn't slip, but I don't know why he doesn't address this or mention the possibility.
There really aren't any more cons. This is a great product. Eventually you'll need an instructor but this book really will stand in for an instructor for your first few months of playing.

My daughter and I both love this song. We saw Laurie, Brian and Susie in concert, and pregnant and all she was excellent, jumping around, dancing, it was very entertaining. We were able to meet with them at the end of the show, and that is where I purchased this book. I think it was a very creative spin on the song. There aren't many words, its just the lyrics, but you can talk about the pictures. It's just very fun for the children to see the song come alive in art. It gives a face to Victor Vito and Freddie Vasco. There is also a CD included with the title track, and another track Buzz Buzz. Another cute fun song from Laurie. I am so glad Noggin started playing her, we really enjoy listening to her.

Growing up in the AME church and listening to music written by African American writers and others was inspiring. To have those songs captured in one book with the music is a plus for me a pianist.
This hymal is used by all musicians in All AME Churches and that in itself is a five star rating.

White Christmas: The Story of an American Song Review

White Christmas: The Story of an American Song
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's time to take a good look at the most popular song ever, top selling and most frequently recorded. _White Christmas: The Story of an American Song_ (Scribner) by Jody Rosen not only tells about the song everyone has heard so many times that no one really listens to it anymore, but also about the songwriter, American twentieth century history, and Tin Pan Alley and its descendants. It's a lot of baggage to load upon a pop song, but it is an amazing little song, and the book has a brisk story told with real love of the music and how it was shaped and how it shaped us.
It's a good thing that Irving Berlin didn't write about a Christmas "just like the ones I used to know." He was born Israel Baline in 1888 in a bleak town in Siberia. Russian peasants, drunk with Christmas cheer, often used the holiday as an excuse for pogroms against the Jews, and his first memory is of his house being burned down. Berlin got no formal musical training, but produced hundreds of songs. In January 1940, Berlin worked over the weekend on a song he became very enthusiastic about. He bustled into his office that Monday morning and said, "I want you to take down a song I wrote over the weekend. Not only is it the best song _I_ ever wrote, it's the best song _anybody_ ever wrote." Christmas 1942 was the first that masses of Americans, soldiers and sailors all over the world, would spend away from home, and could only dream of Christmases just like the ones they used to know. Crosby's version was shipped to them in recordings, and it topped the Hit Parade as a patriotic anthem, displacing "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition." The song signaled that recordings and performers were in and sheet music and songwriters were out. In 1957, Berlin tried to squelch an Elvis Presley version, but couldn't.
Rosen's clear, fully researched book is an essential biography of an American song classic, and will improve your understanding every time you inevitably hear the song again. It encompasses important ideas about the history of modern music, Jewish influence and assimilation, patriotism in song, and the evolution of celebrating Christmas. It is not strictly a Christmas book, for it is about much more than just the season. But it would be fine for those looking for serious and interesting reading for the holidays, or as a gift book for readers who think they have already heard all the song has to say.

A Place in the Choir: Finding Harmony in a World of Many Voices

So says John Jacobsen. And he's right. Marian Wright Edelman (president and founder of the Children's Defense Fund) introduces the book by pointing out the need for all children (and people in general) to feel included. Each member in a choir has something to contribute, regardless of race, appearance, etc.
John takes this theme and uses his experiences around the world to bring it home. He's traveled the globe, leading choirs and education children in the hopes that they will continue to make music for others. A series of short articles interspersed with lyrics from composers like Mac Huff, Emily Crocker, Moses Hogan, and others make this an interesting read. It's not a 'self-help' book - but a book to inspire you to help others. And there are some fun photos of John's world travels :)

Amazing Grace - LARGE Print Review

Amazing Grace - LARGE Print
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to admit, the last few, heck, most books within the last few years by Danielle Steel have been very shallow in storyline, and lacking in character development, making me feel that I'm wasting my time reading them.
I decided to giver her another chance, and picked up the newest release by Steel, Amazing Grace. I have to admit, I read this book in 24 hours. I found it to be a very quick read. I kept finding myself wanting to read on. The characters had a lot of potential, and the story was promising.
What I liked most about the story is that Steel has a unique knack for intertwining several stories with several different characters into her books, without leaving you confused. The characters were all drawn together in one place by one single situation, in this case, an earthquake. The majority of the book discusses how these characters attempt to get back to their normal lives, living with the life-changing effects of the earthquake.
What left me disappointed with the book was that I found the romantic situation in the story between a nun and a photographer (yes, a nun!) not very believable. A nun would not so quickly leave her beliefs behind to get married to a man who got a girl pregnant at 18, and uses vulgar language in her presence. I also felt there could have been a little more "wrap-up" with the characters at the end of the book.
Overall, I recommend this book if you are a Steel fan, but have been disappointed in her last few books. When compared to her other recent releases, Amazing Grace fairs much better with the setting, the situation and the intertwining of the characters, which makes it a very quick read.

I am a Pre-Kindergarten Readiness teacher in my school district for 5 year olds. This book was listed in my Fountas & Pinnell kindergarten phonics text to assist students in learning to read their names in print. I used this story to highlight my students names as we placed them on the word wall in my classroom. I found the text enjoyable and a great learning tool.

Laura Vaccao Seegers, book I had a rooster is a masterpiesce! I am the father of two very rambuntious twin boys. My wife and I strugle to get them to sit down. Each night before bed we used to have to strugle to sit down for a story. Until a freind gave my wife the book "I had a rooster",it combine music in which they can sing to, with a story that they can understand, as well as extrodinary pictures that they enjoy looking at.
The other day one of my boys, sam was home sick. My wife called me at the office to tell me that Sam had actully ask her to read "I had a rooster to him" to him. "I had a rooster" is a great story that all kids should be able to enjoy. It a great gift Idea! I am Thankful, that Seeger produced this book, storytelling and reading are so fundemantal for children being able to learn. I hope thanks to "I had a rooster" Sam and Matthew will be able to learn the joys of reading.

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride: An Invitation to the Wedding (Newmarket Pictorial Moviebook) Review

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride: An Invitation to the Wedding (Newmarket Pictorial Moviebook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A dozen years after its release Tim Burton's "A Nightmare Before Christmas" continues to maintain a cult following. Burton returned to the realm of stop-motion animation as well as the deliciously macabre in "Corpse Bride", just released this year. Burton's love and preservation of the art of stop-motion animation is very important. This is a form of animation that is nearly dead in this country yet in the hands of masters such as Willis O'Brien (King Kong, Son of Kong) and Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans) it has given us many classic films. Burton expresses his deep admiration in a meeting with Harryhausen early on in this book. From Newmarket Press comes this wonderful and informative companion to the film. Unlike the cheaply produced fluff books like other film companion books that are loaded with photos and little worthwhile information, this book takes the reader through the entire filmmaking process from concept to digital filming. It is filled with over 250 color photos, illustrations, and storyboards.
The genesis of "Corpse Bride" began over a decade ago when a friend of Burton's told him about the Russian folklore story that the film is based on. Burton for years had shared his concept for the film with friends and colleagues and the book displays many of Burton's original sketches. The film began pre-production in 2003 and the book takes you through every step of the production process beginning with character creation and storyboards. Most interesting was the team's creation of the dozens of puppets and their armatures that would be used in animating the myriad of characters in the film. Improving upon "A Nightmare Before Christmas" the puppet makers uses a combination of both latex and silicon for the skin which gave a softer, dewy look to the characters and didn't wrinkle like pure latex did.
From there the book covers the casting of the character voices, costume and set design, animation (which was done digitally as opposed to traditional film) and music. The great Danny Elfman composed five songs for the film and the score, as well as providing the voice of the Bone Jangles character. The final fifty or so pages of the book provides an illustrated version of the film told with photos from the film, text, and song lyrics. It's simply a gorgeous book. The photos included are sharp and beautiful. But the real selling point is the wealth of information about the film. It's a must have for fans of the movie.

A stunning visual companion to the newest film from Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), featuring storyboards, movie stills, and Burton's own drawings. Corpse Bride carries on in the dark, romantic tradition of Tim Burton's classic films Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Set in a 19th century European village, this stopmotion, animated feature follows the story of Victor (Johnny Depp), a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham-Carter), while his real bride, Victoria (Emily Watson), waits bereft in the land of the living. Though life in the Land of the Dead proves to be a lot more colorful than his strict Victorian upbringing, Victor learns that there is nothing in this world, or the next, that can keep him away from his one true love. It's a tale of optimism, romance and a very lively afterlife, told in a classic Tim Burton style.Like Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, this official visual companion showcases spectacular movie stills, sketches, paintings, and Tim Burton's own drawings. Covering preproduction, production, and post-production, sections detail character realization, set development and construction, puppet fabrication, costuming, and stop-motion filming. The book's final part retells the film's story in images with synopsis, storyboards, and lyrics. 140 color illustrations.

I was so excited to have a chance to finally learn how to put together a demo package to send to publishers, producers, etc. When I received my book, I was disappointed to find that it was published in 1994, so I hardly think the information is up to date. The author begins by informing the reader that the industry standard of submission is a demo cassette tape. Yeah, right! Even if that were true, how on earth could that information be trusted seven years later. Some of the information is helpful, like putting together a promotional package or contacting A&R people and such. Mostly, however, I feel rooked because I bought something that is completely outdated. My advise to the consumer--wait for the updated version.

For the past five generations the women in Lucy Scarborough's family have been cursed to give birth to a girl at 17-years old then fall into madness. One difference in Lucy's case is that she has her foster family and good friend Zach to protect her. When the inevitable pregnancy happens Lucy finds her birth mother's diary and learns the secrets to breaking the curse. Now Lucy has nine months to figure out and complete three tasks. Will she do it on time and save herself and her daughter or will she be doomed to follow the women in her family into insanity?
The target audience is ages 12 and up however I feel that some of the subject matter in the book would be unsuitable for children so young. Without revealing any spoilers the way Lucy becomes pregnant and the discussions of sex in the book seem more suited for someone at least 16 years or older.
I got through the book in one day however it seemed to drag on more than I expected. Lucy's character is well written but I just couldn't connect with the other characters surrounding her. The happily ever after ending was unbelievable and I feel that the completion of the three tasks could have been developed a whole lot more being that they were a major plot point in Lucy breaking free of the curse.
I'm not convinced that true fantasy readers will like this story. To me it was passable but I would have liked more fantasy elements to the story. The book is more romance or fiction addressing social issues than fantasy. If you're looking for a realistic fantasy with lots of magical elements then this book might not work for you.
