A Pizza The Size Of The Sun
By Jack Prelutsky
I rate this book 5 stars.
I enjoyed reading this book. There are many funny poems in this book, even though a few are hard to read, such as "I was Walking in a Circle" and "My Elephant is Different". My favorite poem is "A Dizzy Little Duzzle" because the end is connected to the beginning. It is also shaped oddly.
Jack Prelutsky writes kind of like Shel Silverstein. They both write funny poems and they both write for kids. If you like funny poems look for other Jack Prelutsky books such as Something Big Has Been Here and The New Kid on the Block.
The drawings in this book are imaginative. They are drawings you would not normally think of, such as the Preposterpus. I think the drawings add to the descriptive language of the poetry.
I did not enjoy poetry as much until I read Jack Prelutsky's poems. I could have chosen a Shel Silverstein book of poems but "A Pizza the Size of the Sun" has some of my favorite poems. It also is less serious than Shel Silverstein's poems. I would highly recommend this book to you.

My 3 1/2 yr old daughter got this for Christmas and i was excited! We started using it for our bed time reading. She become obsessed with the violence of it. It does paraphrase and shorten the stories but for some reason it leaves the death and killing intact. It is 'weird' how it uses kind voices and a gentle tone to say things like "lets kill him and throw him in an empty well" (spoken by joseph's brother).
Some parents may be alright with this but we don't let our kids watch violent television until they can understand the content.

And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, 75th Anniversary Edition (Classic Seuss) Review

And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, 75th Anniversary Edition (Classic Seuss)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you first open this book, you will be struck that it's not quite like any other Dr. Seuss book. The first drawings are smaller and simpler. The poetry is a little more restrained. You'll wonder why it's different, and then you will realize that this was his very first book for children. Like most of us, he was a little restrained at first. But, before long, the full gamut of Dr. Seuss is loose!
Marco is a small boy who walks to school along Mulberry Street. His father likes to encourage him. "'Marco, keep your eyelids up and see what you can see.'" Marco's father is looking for the eye of a scientist or a reporter. But Marco has the eye of a poet. So when Marco tells what he has imagined he has seen, his father sternly says, "'Your eyesight's much too keen. Stop telling such outlandish tales. Stop turning minnows into whales.'"
The story then takes you through one day when Marco only sees a horse pulling a man on a broken-down wagon on Mulberry Street. But Marco soon imagines something much grander. If you change a horse for a zebra, that's better. Or you could change that zebra for a large reindeer. Or better yet, how about an elephant with a Rajah wearing rubies on a throne on top? And on it goes.
When Marco gets home, he's elated. "I ran up the steps and I felt simply GREAT!" The reason for his excitement is because "I HAD A STORY THAT NO ONE COULD BEAT!" I think you'll agree.
So what does he tell his father? You'll be amazed!
I found that this book worked well at several levels. First, it captures the kind of miscommunication between parent and child that can set up barriers that exclude what could be much shared joy. Marco's father needs to learn to enjoy his son's imagination, as long as Marco isn't confused about what is real and what is imagination.
Second, many people have trouble understanding how to be creative. Substitution of elements is a classic technique. Here, the structure of that process is elegantly displayed. First, you replace one element. Then you see if that helps you see a way to create a related replacement of another element. Then what does that suggest? And on it goes. Soon, there is no obvious link back to the beginning, but you have created something wonderful that would have been hard to do from a blank sheet of paper. Fiction writers, pay attention!
Third, most children these days complain that they are bored all of the time if they don't have someone putting on a world class act for them. Here is a good role model for how they can create an exciting set of thoughts out of something very mundane. Wow! Is this needed, or what?
To take advantage of this potential, I suggest that you and your child go out for a walk and play this imagination game together. Then, come back and make a book out of the experience that recounts how you went from one step to another. That's a wonderful way to ensure that your child's natural brilliance has a chance to develop even further, and she or he will realize that you want to enter into play with him or her. Wonderful bonding will result!
Enjoy all of the potential of everyone and everything!

Generic Enrichment in Vergil and Horace Review

Generic Enrichment in Vergil and Horace
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Harrison here addresses what he terms generic enrichment by exploring the works of two Augustan poets, Vergil and Horace. There is ample discussion here of the complexity and diversity of literary forms and textures absorbed in the Eclogues, Sermones, Epodes, Georgics, Odes and Aeneid. The argument hangs primarily on intertextual literary analysis and the chronology of publishing biographical dates rather than on historical contextualization. I am far more impressed by the author's ability to draw insights and influence from the suggestive fragmentary remains of authors such as Parthenius, Nicander, Pacuvius and Gallus than by his ability to provide a satisfying explanation for the flourishing of generic forms in Augustan Rome. Interesting times do not account completely for interesting forms. Far more likely a cause to me seems to be that given by Peter White elsewhere (in Galinsky's collection of essays on the Augustan Age): the stability of Augustan peace provided for the opportunity at a poetic career and the longevity with which learned poets such as Vergil and Horace could experiment in response to their forebearers. However, the groundwork that Harrison provides for his discussion of genre, based in part on a "host" form and "guest" material, is clear and his readings of individual poems (e. g., the section on tragedy in the Aeneid surpasses many) strike me as compelling and well considered.

S. J. Harrison sets out to sketch one answer to a key question in Latin literary history: why did the period c.39-19 BC in Rome produce such a rich range of complex poetical texts, above all in the work of the famous poets Vergil and Horace? Harrison argues that one central aspect of this literary flourishing was the way in which different poetic genres or kinds (pastoral, epic, tragedy, etc.) interacted with each other and that that interaction itself was a prominent literary subject. He explores this issue closely through detailed analysis of passages of the two poets' works between these dates. Harrison opens with an outline of generic theory ancient and modern as a basis for his argument, suggesting how different poetic genres and their partial presence in each other can be detected in the Latin poetry of the first century BC.

While I am always excited when a new Oscar book is published this is a book that you probably shouldn't get too excited over. While there are some interesting parts about this book the very simple fact that they get the most basic facts wrong is inexcusable. Estelle Parsons has only won 1 Oscar, not 2. There are other such mistakes like that. It just made me wonder how many other mistakes there are in the book that I didn't catch. There are some admirable aspects to this book, but wait until this book is in the $10 book bin to buy it.

The Edge of the Divine: Where Possibility Meets God's Faithfulness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The "Edge of the Divine" by Sandi Patty was just "okay" for me. First and foremost, the book is all about Sandi's life. It reads like a journal or a "Christmas Letter" at times. Throughout the book I became uninterested as the author ventured into too much detail about her life such as family issues in moving to Oklahoma...whether or not her children had furniture in their new apartment...a ring she kept losing...her "show clothes" that mistakenly got taken to the Salvation Army...etc. I didn't feel that those details added to the read...they seemed to take away from the message Sandi was trying to convey. I've encountered this with books by Sheila Walsh as well (Sandi's friend and Women of Faith fellow speaker). For the average woman...these authors come across as "out of touch" with the real hard pressing issues of women today.
Sandi certainly is a "likeable" person and the book was VERY easy to read through. But, if you're looking to deepen your faith through the testimony in this book...you'll be disappointed. I actually would not recommend it to anyone who does not have an "overeating" problem. The book just won't speak to you. And at $20 a book...I just don't feel that you will be content with your purchase. If you're looking to just learn more about Sandi Patty and the details of her life...then by all means indulge. But, for those who are needing a book that will bring about strength, encouragement, and a strong presence of the Lord in your life...this just isn't that book.
*I was given this book by BookSneeze for free in exchange for my review.

This is a very interesting read. If you're a fan of strong female music artists --- and have ever thought about what others think of music by women like listed in the description --- this book is the place to find it. The book has very touching stories about women's struggles in life --- and offers detailed examples of what particular songs mean to folks. It's a neat read.

They're Playing Our Songs offers a unique and fascinating vehicle for women's voices to be heard on the subject of women's music and how it affects their lives. Author Ann M. Savage explores 15 women's engagements with what might be called feminist rock music, including that of such noted artists as Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, the Indigo Girls, and Melissa Etheridge. The women interviewed here tell deeply personal stories of how songs by these musicians have helped them survive and cope with turbulent life experiences such as difficult work environments, depression, and abusive relationships.

As we can see, then, music can be not only pleasurable but also fiercely expressive, in ways that allow its listeners some vicarious catharsis. These accounts of personal transformation make for a book that is at once compelling and dynamically political, revealing the myriad ways in which art, polemics, and life intertwine to create a side of womanhood that few ever get to see.

I Am Not But I Know I Am: Welcome to the Story of God Review

I Am Not But I Know I Am: Welcome to the Story of God
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Louie is an excellent communicator, and this book was no exception. It's easy to read and makes its point clearly. He also draws on Scripture without making the reader be too weighed down by Scripture references and theology.
The message Louie brings in this book is one that most churches (at least the ones I've been to) gloss over. Here's a basic summary of what he's trying to say:
- Everything in this universe is all about God (whose name is I AM, from the verb "to be").
- The story of God is an eternal story of everlasting significance.
- The story of you is a brief story like a wisp of vaper that disappears.
- So, if you want your life to count, you should join your story with His story.
It's a good book, and a fairly quick read; it'll only take a couple hours to finish. However, it's an excellent reminder that this universe is not about me; creation is all about God.

We wear ourselves out trying to be smarter, bigger, the center of attention. But dynamic communicator Louie Giglio's latest book puts success back in perspective. When John the Baptist said that he must decrease while Jesus must increase, he was expressing the secret to astonishing freedom…and incredible rest. This book will teach you the rich, meaningful lifestyle of being small. Free from the worries that used to strangle you, you'll radiate the power of the God who is all the things you aren't! I am not, but God knows my name.I am not, but He has pursued me in His love.I am not, but I know the Creator of the universe.I am not, but I know I AM! If you see life as your own one-act play and history as your story, you could be in for a rude awakening when the curtain finally closes on your tiny tale—and you discover that life wasn't all about you after all.The real story of life is God—I AM—the main character and true star of time and eternity. He is at center stage in all of Creation, and He wants you to know Him by name. Knowing I AM means embracing your smallness in light of His greatness.Savor the true meaning of life as you learn to work and rest in His power, spending your life for what lasts forever—the unending glory that is God's alone.Story Behind the BookLouie Giglio recognizes a world and culture that keeps pushing us to be bigger, to be known, to be on top, to be at the center of everything. He encourages those who know how to right-size it all. Instead of pumping up their own programs, agendas, ideas, and plans, their goal is to keep getting smaller in order for Jesus to get bigger. Regarding themselves in relation to Jesus, they have the same goal John the Baptist had: "He must increase, I must decrease."

Tawny Scrawny Lion (Little Golden Book) Review

Tawny Scrawny Lion (Little Golden Book)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't believe some of the ludicrous reviews on here. One lady fusses because she's a vegetarian and the rabbits are depicted as putting fish in their stew; another person fusses because the lion is depicted as eating kangaroos, when lions are not native to Australia. So, let's see: Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, The Lion King, Charlotte's Web, Snow White, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, and every other children's story ever invented, likewise should be fussed about, because all contain implausible claims and non-PC events. So dumb. The point of the story is how the little rabbit's sincerity and hospitality provokes a change in the predatory lion. It's not a David Attenborough documentary, okay?
Anyway, here's the story: When "The Tawny Scrawny Lion" opens, a lion is devouring the local animal population. Frightened, the local animals convince a young rabbit to approach the lion in hopes that the lion will eat the rabbit, and thus leave them alone for another day. However, as the lion prepares to pounce, the naive, cheery rabbit invites the lion to come home with him to eat dinner with him and all his siblings. Eager to eat them all, the lion agrees.
But as the day wears on, with the rabbit gathering herbs and fish for the carrot stew, they become friends. And once the lion gets to know the rabbit's family, he softens, and the story ends with the lion and rabbits all great friends. After that, the lion only wants to hang out with the rabbits and eat carrot stew. The rabbit family's sincere hospitality has won the lion over.
This is a wonderful little tale with striking illustrations. I read this book all the time as a kid, and I read it to my kids now all the time, and it just never gets old. In fact, I still find it touching everytime.
I hope this review helped someone.

Take a magical journey OVER THE RAINBOW. When all the world is a hopeless jumbleand the raindrops tumble all around, Heaven opens a magic lane. When all the clouds darken up the skyway, there's a rainbow highway to be found, Leading from your window pane to a place behind the sun, just a step beyond the rain. You may not immediately recognize these words--but you definitely know and love the song to which they belong. This is the introductory verse to Over the Rainbow, sung with such memorable poignancy by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. Although she actually recorded these opening lyrics, they were never used in the film. Now, this classic song has been transformed into a magnificent picture book and CD set. Breathtaking and magical artwork by Eric Puybaret will carry young readers from a little red farmhouse up over the rainbow, into the sky where bluebirds fly and castles rise high in the clouds, and beyond. The extraordinary soundtrack for this book is performed by Judy Collins, who has recorded what might be the very best version of Over the Rainbow ever sung. The winner of a Grammy Award, Collins's glorious voice is one of the most admired of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her version of this classic will delight and touch the heart of every parent and child who listens. As an added bonus, the enclosed CD also contains two delightful additional songs recorded by Judy Collins: White Choral Bells and I See the Moon.

Standing on My Own Two Feet: A Child's Affirmation of Love in the Midst of Divorce
Average Reviews:

I just bought this book as a special gift for a friend who has 2 young children and is going through a divorce. The dreaded questions in these cases that involve kids seem to be, a.) How is it going to affect the kids and, b.) How do you discuss it with them in the most supportive, least damaging way? In other words, how do you help them get through this, especially when you're dealing with your own depressing feelings about the divorce?
This book provides a simple, clear way to explain to children that although their parents now live in separate homes, it is not their fault and they are still loved by both parents. They can still be strong, happy kids. The pages are really colorful with nice artwork. The wording is simple & straight forward. The message is one that every single child of a divorced family deserves to hear over and over again. It is NOT their fault. This book made a wonderful, sweet gift for a family who truly needed some positive inspiration. I think they will treasure it always. Now that I've read it, I plan to buy another copy for a family I just heard is going to get a divorce. It's so sad that divorce is all around, at least there is some help to get through it. This is a really good book to help kids and parents alike.

When I was ages 4-7 with constant earaches, and finally needing my tonsils out, this book was the only bribe that would get me to the pediatricians office.( He had a copy in his waiting room)
My kids loved it just as much. Im not sure why it's even more popular than other Dr. Seuss. Perhaps because of the beautifully expanding imaginary depths that the hero imagines lie beneath McElligot's Pool. The delightfully bizarre illustrations of the ever more outrageous fish that might populate this world are mysterious and entrancing. As always, Dr. Seuss is a genius at putting common, and his own invented words together into sentences that sing themselves off the page.
This is a wonderful story for kids 3-7. (Please, don't make them go to the doctor's office to read it) :-)

Fear Not Tomorrow, God Is Already There: Trusting Him in Uncertain Times
Average Reviews:

I met Ruth Graham a few years back and could sense her presence as I read this book. She is honest and frank as she talks about stories from her life where God became real. Ruth also tells of her struggle with fear and other issues.
Some of the chapters in this book are titled Trust at My Doorstep, Discover His Trustworthiness, Experience His Presence, Know His Comfort. In each chapter Ruth gives a story from her own life and one from the bible that helps describe yet another aspect of God which helped her grow in His love for her and the plan He has for her life.
I liked how Ruth described fear. "Fear takes the air out of life. When we live with fear, we lose our capacity for fun and spontaneity. We struggle to love others whole heartedly....Sometimes we experience fear as torment. Torment is not God's will for us. God is committed to our peace."
Ruth also says, "When I am willing to be myself, when I am willing to let God work through my insufficiency, incredible things can happen. Through my weaknesses God can work and show His greatness. Paul caught this truth. I liked how Ruth helped us apply scripture to our lives.
In the back of this book God's attributes in ABC order. This can be used as a tool in prayer. It's also a starting point for praising God. I was really encouraged by the message and hope in Ruth's story. It's easy to understand and refreshing. I've received a copy of this book to review and these are my words about how Ruth's book inspired me.
