I saw this on sale in a bookstore right before Christmas several years back and because I love Simon Dewy as an artist, and Hilary Weeks as a songwriter, I begged my mother to get it for me for Christmas (something I usually would NEVER do). My dear angel mother obliged and I got it for Christmas. I then proceeded to listen to each song while following along in the book (the words correspond with the pictures). I instantly got goosebumps, and was in tears before the end of the first song. The music and the pictures are lovely and powerful alone, but together they create one of the most powerful experiences.
It is a fantastic value simply for the pictures, but the 5 songs by Hilary Weeks really make this book a must for any Christian home. I also love that the cd is inside the book in a clear sleeve so it doesn't get lost. The only thing I found even slightly noteworthy for any negative, was the fact that the CD titles are mixed up a little when you put it on the computer to listen to, I don't know why, and it doesn't bother me, but I can see how it could be frustrating to someone who wanted the accurate titles on the computer. There is a list of the exact names, and copyright dates in the back of the book though, so that one could correct the names.
It has been at least three years since that Christmas when I received this amazing book and I still have and love it, and yes, it still makes me cry :)
EXTRA: If you want to listen to a sample of the songs, look up Hilary Weeks, and the songs which are featured are: "Greater Miracles", "All my days", "My brother, my Savior, my friend", "When He calls my name", and "He is."

The Cambridge Companion to Medieval French Literature (Cambridge Companions to Literature) Review

The Cambridge Companion to Medieval French Literature (Cambridge Companions to Literature)
Average Reviews:

In the Introduction the editors write "We have also taken a conscious decision not to make extensive use of 'theory' in this volume..." (16). Nevertheless, it is saturated in theory, so much so that it must be useless for anything but university-level courses. I suspect these editors are no more capable of writing a book without theory than a priest of writing a book without theology. If you want to learn about medieval French literature--to read an overview of the chanson de geste cycles, for example--this book is not for you. If you don't know what is meant by "theory", this book is not for you.

Medieval French literature encompasses 450 years of literary output in Old and Middle French, mostly produced in Northern France and England. These texts, including courtly lyrics, prose and verse romances, dits amoureux and plays, proved hugely influential for other European literary traditions in the medieval period and beyond. This Companion offers a wide-ranging and stimulating guide to literature composed in medieval French from its beginnings in the ninth century until the Renaissance. The essays are grounded in detailed analysis of canonical texts and authors such as the Chanson de Roland, the Roman de la Rose, Villon's Testament, Chrétien de Troyes, Machaut, Christine de Pisan and the Tristan romances. Featuring a chronology and suggestions for further reading, this is the ideal companion for students and scholars in other fields wishing to discover the riches of the French medieval tradition.

Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Pictorial Tribute to the Negro National Anthem Review

Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Pictorial Tribute to the Negro National Anthem
Average Reviews:

When I was in high school, I made a point of memorizing the words of all three verses of "Lift Every Voice and Sing". We must never forget our history, and be ever joyful of the opportunities of today and tomorrow. If you have never heard this song before, you can find the 1st and 3rd verses sung on the 2nd CD in the 3 CD set "100 Best Loved Hymns". The choir is likely an all-white choir, and I think the 2nd verse was just to painful for them to sing. However, we should remember the pain of American slavery, and vow to never let such ugliness occur again. We must know our history in order to move forward as a nation.

My 20 month old loves this and "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon". From the moment I got them they were his two new favorites. I think the reviewer was mistaken in terms of the illustration. They are beautifully done and my Son can almost recite the book by heart by looking at the pictures. Maybe the reviewer doesn't have children to test with... I gave this book a 4 and Moon a 5 according to my son's preference. I wish there were more of these books on the market.

Joel Whitburn Presents Hot Country Albums Billboard 1964-2007 Review

Joel Whitburn Presents Hot Country Albums Billboard 1964-2007
Average Reviews:

The "Hot Country Albums" book has been a neglected entry in the Whitburn line; the last edition was published in 1997.
While this is a welcome addition, the book contains a serious flaw: it does not provide "crossover" data for albums that charted on the primary chart, the Billboard 200, which ranks the top albums of all genres.
This was also an issue in Whitburn's book "Top Country Songs 1944-2005," which omitted crossover Hot 100 data, although it had been included in previous editions. After much criticism, this data has been reinstated for the newest edition of the book, to be released in late 2008.
There are enough improvements in this long-overdue edition to recommend it to music fans. However, Record Research's habit of withholding key information is disappointing.

The book is good but not for begginers. It will teach you how to use vst plugins mostly which is very important but, I gave it one star only because the Cds are stored in a really stupid way, uncoverd and face down to the rough surface of internal side of the book hardcover. The result is, all the dvds are totally scratched and three are damaged. the book is expensive, couldn't they pack it in some plastic.

Beginning Mandolin Review

Beginning Mandolin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a short but sweet introduction to techniques both universal to music and specific to mandolin. Not a page of the book is wasted; the book is aimed at people with no previous experience, and I think its greatest strength is the pace and the very logical order of lessons and techniques that are taught.
Like many novice musicians, I am eager to "dive right in" and start sounding like a pro, but that takes time, hard work, and practice. Many books focus too much on theory or basic drills for reading standard notation, practicing rhythm, etc. I find myself skipping through those books trying to find "the good stuff" so I can actually play a song.
On the other hand, many beginner books ONLY include simple songs and melodies, knowing that most of us just want to play some music. However, the flaw with those books are that they skip over important drills and basics required for learning or composing new music once you are done with the songs in the book.
Horne's Beginning Mandolin book includes a little bit of both -- basics and composition interspersed with short rhythms and traditional melodies for practice. In this way you are exposed both to the songs and fun licks to make you feel good and enjoy the music you are making even as a novice, as well as the core concepts and techniques that will be required for composing your own music, jamming, or taking it to the next level of difficulty. I find that this variety makes it very easy to pick up the book and start playing -- you won't want to miss a drill or lesson in the book, so it's very useful to just go through the book in the order it is presented. On the other hand, I just got finished with another session of practice using this book -- I have played through it once and "learned" all of the basics, but it's also great as a tool to refine those basics and master them. I have owned the book for a year and although I am 100 times better than when I started, I am still mastering some of the book's skills before I move into the Intermediate level (which I have also purchased)
Another nice feature of the book is that it logically progresses through different musical styles to build your repertoire and introduce a variety of scales, licks, and progressions that build on previous styles from folk music and fiddle tunes to blues, bluegrass, and finally into rock.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I only wish there were more books with such a simple, logical, yet robust sequence and variety of drills for other instruments. (I have yet to find a guitar book as well-paced and comprehensive for beginners as this book is)

Excellent reference book, listing every country single that charted between Jan. 1944 and Dec. 1997 (all 16,693 of them). Includes highest chart position, date charted, weeks on chart and B-side of charted single. Also shows record label and number, along with peak position on the pop charts if the record was a crossover hit as well. Not much in the way of artist bio info (only a couple of lines on even the biggest stars), but you probably won't miss it. If you've only got one reference book covering country music from the last 50 years, this should be the one. Look up any song, any artist, settle any bet. Great Stuff.

Turandot: Vocal Score Review

Turandot: Vocal Score

There seems to be a complicated mix-up with this product at Amazon. The first time I ordered it I was sent something completely different, and the two reviews below (March 2007 and September 2000) clearly aren't about this item. So to avoid confusion: what is on offer here is a FULL (ORCHESTRAL AND VOCAL) SCORE of Puccini's final opera.
Ricordi has started a series of affordable full scores, Dover-style, but just a tad more classy. While Dover offers reprints of early editions, what you get here is a fully up-to-date version of the score reflecting the latest revisions and edits. The music is printed on firm, white paper and easy to read. It is prefaced by a portrait of the composer, a list of instruments, and a synopsis of the action in English, French and Italian. The Alfano completion of the final duet and finale is included. It is a pity that a little editorial lapse resulted in the omission of a page (238) - in my copy, this is added as an erratum on a separate sheet, but I trust this will be corrected in later reprints. What will be more of a problem for many users is that apart from the synopsis, everything is Italian only, language-wise. If, like me, you don't know what `ottone' are, I'll help you out in advance: they are the onstage brass ensemble. You may encounter some more of such conundrums while perusing the score, but on the plus side, you'll improve your Italian. In the end this is a most worthwhile purchase for any admirer of this magnificent opera; only by seeing the notes you'll become fully aware of its dazzling intricacies.

Genesis and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series) Review

Genesis and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series)

I have been a Genesis fan for over 20 years now, and I especially like the Lamb. I have always enjoyed the music and Gabriel's voice, the orchestration, the solos and parts of the lyrics, but I have not had the chance to see this piece of art as a whole really. This books guided me through the very background of the creating of the Lamb, the sociological, cultural and economical state of play of the time of NYC, then through the music in details.
After having read this book, I arrived at a new level of understanding this record and the Gabriel years of Genesis, and now I am an even greater admire of theirs.

In 1974, the British progressive rock group Genesis released their double concept album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", now widely regarded as a classic album of 1970s progressive rock. The story was described by Genesis' then front-man Peter Gabriel as a 'moral fable' about a half-Puerto-Rican street tough from New York City named Rael, who is engulfed by a solid cloud into a series of strange adventures in a metaphysical realm. This album has inspired nearly fanatical devotion among progressive rock fans, some of whom have constructed elaborate web sites purporting to 'explain' "The Lamb". The album is a surreal allegory drawing its material from religious, literary and psychological themes. More than thirty years after its release, "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" still enthralls listeners, earning the distinction of being Genesis' most consistently selling back-catalogue release. As the book's title implies, this study will analyse "The Lamb" both within the context of progressive rock, examining its special place in Genesis' recorded output and in the progressive rock genre as a whole, and within the context of social and political changes of the mid 1970s.It is important to consider that "The Lamb" marked a shift in Genesis' subject matter; in 1974 the group was on the verge of 'breaking into' the American music market, then the largest market for recorded music in the world, but they were still regarded as that most British of British progressive rock bands, with songs about Victorian giant hogweeds and albums like "Selling England By The Pound"."The Lamb" marked a conscious shift in their story setting to America, and for the first time the songs were oriented to the present rather than the past or future. Significantly, while 1974 marked the peak of music industry growth and consolidation through corporate mergers, it was also the year in which America was confronted with its limits, through the first of the OPEC energy crises, the crisis of confidence in government following the resignation of Richard Nixon, the withdrawal from Vietnam, and the effects of runaway inflation. Genesis' native Britain was also to feel the effects of the energy crisis, intensified by coal miner and railway worker strikes and a period of economic slowdown that ultimately led to the rise of Thatcherism."The Lamb" is set in New York City during this time of uncertainty, and it ironically also marks the last concept album of progressive rock's 'golden age'. Within a few years the economic constraints would affect the industry as a whole and progressive rock would suffer a precipitous drop in industry support, owing to the unusual expenses involved in its promotion and marketing. "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" thus makes a particularly rich subject for detailed study; seldom does one fine such compelling intersections between the musical, textual and socioeconomic aspects of an album.

The Story Behind the Song: 150 Songs that Chronicle the 20th Century Review

The Story Behind the Song: 150 Songs that Chronicle the 20th Century
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For several weeks I kept "The Story Behind the Song" on the corner of my desk, turning to it intermittently when I sought information on the background of a particular composition. That's one way to enjoy this book. A better way is to approach it less as a reference volume and more as the concise and fascinating history of 20th-century moods and popular music that it is.
The book is organized by decades. Each chapter includes a two- to three-page overview of that decade along with accounts of 15 of the decade's best known songs. The accounts cover expected topics such as composers' inspirations, key performers and recordings, and current availability of the songs in printed form. But the authors have gone beyond mere reporting in the way they've woven these and other factors into brief, well crafted essay portraits of the various periods.
A good example can be seen in the way the composition "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" speaks for a particular moment in America's past. In telling the story behind this song authors Barnet, Nemerov, and Taylor convey (in just four paragraphs) both the optimistic mood of the county in early 1929, before the October stock market crash, and the personal cynicism of blues artist Bessie Smith. When she recorded "Nobody Knows You..." on May 15, 1929, she was telling the story of her own world weary stardom in a song that became her signature, the authors state, even as it "prophetically declared the end of good times."
The range of songs chosen for inclusion in each chapter is as surprising as the individual song accounts. In the 1940s, for instance, compositions as different as "In the Mood," "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer," and "Some Enchanted Evening" are juxtaposed. The chapter on music of the 80s includes Paul Winter's "River Run" next to the "Miami Vice Theme." Yet in both the 40s and the 80s the overview addresses societal themes broad enough to allow for and even explain such differences. This is true of the other decades as well.
If I were an aspiring popular musician, I would rush to avail myself of the bibliography and the web site and research center listings at the end of this book. For the rest of us, the tune-loving public, it's a treat to encounter clear accounts of how some of the 20th centuries best loved songs came into being.

The Bob Dylan Scrapbook, 1956-1966 Review

The Bob Dylan Scrapbook, 1956-1966
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bob Dylan scrapbook.
This is a wonderful trip down memory lane.
The text of the book
The book basically a narrative of the years from 1956 to 1966. It provides a nice insight to Bob Dylan before the fame up to Blonde on Blonde. Most of it the true Dylan aficionado would already know, but it is very well written. The book is only 64 pages in length and can be read in a couple hours if you don't stop to examine the scraps.
The Scraps.
These are special. The book is heavily laced with reproductions of memorabilia from advertisements for Zimmerman furniture and electric, concert tickets, photos, newspaper clippings taped to the pages to advertisments for shows. My favorite scraps are the reproductions of hand written lyrics for Talking New York, Blowin in the wind, It ain't me babe, Chimes of freedom, Gates of Eden, Like a rolling stone and She's your lover now.
The CD.
This contains about 45 minutes of interviews that are chopped up into short segments. Sometimes you get to hear the interviewers question and sometimes you don't but you can usually figure out what the question might have been based Dylan's answer. On the CD Dylan will ramble on a little but it is all good. During some of the interviews when he speaks it seems like it is the same cadence as Like a rolling stone and other times more in the cadence of MR Tambourine man which is something I never realized until I listened to this CD. Some of the interviews are actual interviews from that time period and some are newer and are of Dylan reflecting on that time period.
Summary:
This is a really interesting to read, look at and listen to. A nice ride on Dylan's magic swirling ship. You will not be disapointed, a five star book all the way.

When I ordered this score I was hoping it would be an Italian/English score. However, since the descriptions for opera scores on this site are sketchy at best, I was slightly disappointed when I received it. I prefer performing operas in their original language, but the company I was working with at the time was performing in English. The price is great for a hardcover Ricordi score, but don't get this one if you think you'll ever have to sing it in English.
