For anyone who has spent time in Europe during Christmastime, this is sure to bring back fond memories.
This book explains German Christmas traditions with good detail. Each tradition is written out both in English and in German. Overall the translation is good, but centered more on meaning than word for word. The accompanying CD is narrated in German - I didn't realize the stories would also be on the CD so this was a nice surprise.
At first the pages can be a little overwhelming to look at and might be difficult for a child to follow because of all the text, but the pictures are nice and colorful.
The voice of the Woman on the CD is very dramatic with a strong vibrato - Good German style, but could be seen by some as a bit over the top. The childrens choir is great.

Love Lyrics of Ancient Egypt Review

Love Lyrics of Ancient Egypt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My introduction to the love poetry of Egypt came in a course on the Song of Songs (aka Song of Solomon) which used as a text Michael Fox's The Song of Songs and the Ancient Egyptian Love Songs. Ms. Fowler has translated these poems with philogical assistance from Fox. The result is a very readable translation - enjoyable on it's own. However, I found myself going back to Fox for the background to truly understand some of the poems - the cultural chasm and the passage of time eroded the meaning of the poems to me.
However, the translations are lightly footnoted with required information e.g. that Menqet is the goddess of beer or that a word is added for meter. While I prefer translations that stand on their own, this is a good choice for an introduction to a little known poetry that had significant impact on our culture indirectly via the Song of Songs

Rhinoceros Tap: 15 Seriously Silly Songs (Book and CD)
Average Reviews:

I wondered much while ordering "Rhinoceros Tap" , as my 3 years old boy doesn't know English and this was expected to be his first sing & song book. But now I think that it was the best choice I could have done for the beginning. My boy liked it very much. It's really funny for parents too. Sometimes I listen to the songs when my boy isn't at home. He likes the animals singing, he likes to dance with them and we mostly sing and dance together. I recommend this book to parents all over the world.

Redesigned. Reformatted. Remastered. Resequenced. Ready for Re-release. And it was already great to begin with! Before there was Philadelphia Chickens, the #1 New York Times and Publishers Weekly children's bestseller with 319,000 copies in print, there was Rhinoceros Tap, the collection of seriously silly songs. Now Rhinoceros Tap returns in an all-new package to mirror Philadephia Chickens, with a spiffy audio CD. Written and illustrated by Sandra Boynton and with music by Boynton and Michael Ford, the same team that created Philadelphia Chickens, it's a read-along, sing-along, dance-along, oink-along collection of truly delightful children's music. There's "O, Lonely Peas," to appeal to the finicky young eater. The five-year-old's lament, "Bad Babies" ("They whine and they bite, they chew on your toys/And oh, do they make the most terrible noise"). "Tickle Time." "The Crabby Song." A mouse's impassioned ballad to his beloved, "I Love You More Than Cheese." And "Barnyard Dance," the song that was launched by the board book dear to the hearts of more than a million young readers.

Jokerman: Reading the Lyrics of Bob Dylan

Uncompromisingly academic, this short but in-depth study of the notions of identity in Bob Dylan's lyrics would probably be inaccessible for anyone not in possession of an Eng Lit degree. A must for anyone with said degree and a Dylan collection.

Bob Dylan is described as one of the most startling, prolific and controversial contemporary song-writers. This book explores the complexity and subtlety of his lyrics and their themes, seeking to make intelligible that seems obscure and difficult. The author reviews the manner in which many of Dylan's lyrics treat fundamental questions concerning the nature of human identity. He argues that these lyrics represent a continuation of the experimental poetic practices of modernism. At the heart of Dylan's work are the discrepancies between the conscious, socialized self, born of language, and those potencies of personality that lie outside rational formulation. For Dylan, identity is multiform and bizarre, resisting attempts to resolve the disjunction between conscious and unconscious dimensions of mind or to distinguish absolutely between light and dark forces in the personality. Through close readings of lyrics from the whole of Dylan's career to date, this book offers insights into the force and meaning of the works. An appendix outlines the course of Dylan's career and lists his officially released recordings.

Patti Smith: Complete lyrics, reflections, and notes for the future

Patti Smith has put together an impecable collection of her lyrics. Yet unlike the majority of lyric books these days (they mostly look like text books that publishers just throw togehter) you can tell Patti was present and an integral part of each pages' layout. The lyrics scan like the poems they are. Each of the 150 mostly unpublised photographs are reproduced beautifully. This is a fine example of an artisit transcending one of their forms and creating an entirely new work. Thank you Patti

Stone Tables Review

Stone Tables
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Orson Scott Card first presented his interpretation of Moses in the 1973 musical drama "Stone Tables" (the title comes from Exodus 24:12). This 1997 novel expands that story and reflects not only the book of Exodus, but the Mormon Book of Moses, and works of both history and speculation. As Card points out in his Preface, the account in Exodus says nothing of the life and achievements of Moses as a prince of Egypt and barely touches on his private life. Indeed, most scripture tends to be long on narrative and short on characterization. Card uses his formidable writing talents to make not only Moses, but his brother Aaron, sister Miriam, wife Zeforah, father-in-law Jethro, and the Pharaoh Tuthmose come alive as characters.
"Stone Tables" is speculation. The genesis for this speculation is Card's questions about the convoluted relationship between Moses and Aaron. In thinking over the life of Aaron, who watched his younger brother lead his people out of bondage, witnesses first hand the miracles of the plagues upon Egypt, and made a golden calf for the Israelites while Moses was up on Mount Sinai receiving the 10 Commandments from God, Card believed he saw a pattern of envy. However, "Stone Tables" goes well beyond providing a rationale for Aaron's actions.
For non-Mormon readers, such as myself, there are two major differences between the stories of Moses told in "Stone Tables" and that related by the book of Exodus (and the movies "The Ten Commandments" and "Prince of Egypt"). The first is that characters in the novel refer to their foreknowledge of Christ, which Card clearly states is part of the worldview of the Latter-day Saints. I have no problems with the idea that God let Moses and other member of the faithful know that a greater savior was going to redeem the people down the road. If God would let Moses stand in his presence and watch the passing of his glory, then sharing a glimpse of the greater design seems a small leap of faith to take.
The second and more interesting difference is that the fact Moses is the adopted son of the daughter of Pharaoh is never hidden. When Hatshepsut takes the baby from the Nile, she knows the child is the son of a Hebrew slave and that the little girl who knows of someone who can nurse the infant is the sister of Moses taking the boy to his mother. The river brought her a son and with the support of Pharaoh that story is taken as gospel by the people of Egypt. Consequently, Moses knows his "real" family from early in life and rejects his Hebrew heritage by conscious choice rather than out of ignorance. Aaron and Miriam assail him at every opportunity to free his people, but Moses will have none of it. Clearly in this novel the second element is the most significant and it provides the context for reexamining how Moses came to know God and why Pharaoh hardened his heart. In the case of the latter the emphasis is on making the power known to not only Pharaoh but the Israelites as well. Card also works out the cold logic of the escalating plagues visited upon the land of Egypt.
Ultimately, the most fascinating parts of Card's novel are the dialogues between the characters, which only makes sense. Such dialogues are at a minimum in scripture and they comprise the part of the story that will be seen as "new" by many readers. Many of the characters are capable of great humor, not to mention biting wit and caustic insights, and not only the dialogues but also the internal reflections of the characters are well thought out by Card. I was particularly fond of Jethro and Zeforah, who exhibit such great joy in expressing their faith, and appreciated the flaws that were both the strengths and weaknesses of Aaron and Miriam. The sibling rivalries, both in Egypt and in the land of Midian, are particularly fun as well, although reflecting clearly modern sensibilities.
Card's speculations hold together pretty well, although it is his characterization of Moses that makes or breaks the book. The transformation from a questioning creature of doubt into a true servant of God is captivating and well motivated. However, when Card includes the conversation between Moses and God in the presence of the burning bush the scene does not ring true. Card has presented Moses as fully willing to embrace God's plan for him, which makes him trying to get out of his destiny and arguing for a place for his brother seem a step backwards. That is the part of Moses that always confused me: if God makes a personal appearance and tells you he is going to be right by your side, arguing with him seems somewhat inappropriate. In Card's story the Moses who confronts Pharaoh is so supremely confident that it is hard to believe he showed such doubts in God's presence. Consequently, I of course find myself agreeing more with Card's speculations.
I would think that you would know before you pick up "Stone Tables" if religious fiction in general or this story of Moses in particular is going to offend your sensibilities. Card has amply demonstrated over the years that he is not only an excellent writer but a person of faith. The latter is the primary requirement for any author of religious fiction; the former is simply a big plus.

Songs of a Friend: Love Lyrics of Medieval Portugal : Selections from Cantigas De Amigo
Average Reviews:

"Songs of a Friend" is both fantastically written and translated. One of the relatively undiscovered treasures from the late Middle Ages in Portugal, it serves as a looking glass into the literature and political climite of the time, esp. during the reign of Dom Dinis. Very much worth the investment for the better picture of troubadour Europe.

Portugal enjoyed one of the richest and most sophisticated cultures of the Middle Ages, in part because of its vibrant secular literature. One popular literary genre of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries was the cantigas de amigo, love songs in which male poets wrote from a female perspective. More than five hundred of these mysterious poems depicting a young girl's love for an absent lover survive today. Until now, however, they have remained inaccessible except to a small circle of scholars.
In her translation of nearly one hundred representative examples of the cantigas de amigo, Barbara Hughes Fowler recovers the beauty of these poems for the modern reader. Her accurate and elegant renderings capture the charming spontaneity of the lyrics and show them to be a uniquely appealing form of medieval literature.(excerpt of one of the poems)Lovely mother, I saw my friendbut did not speak with him and so I lost him,but now I'm dying of love for him.I did not speak because of my disdain;I'm dying, mother, for love of him.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I highly recommend this book!! I could not stop reading it once I picked it up. I really feel the author's words can be very influential to many people when set to music or when read as poems. I am a social worker who works with vulnerable populations and am so excited that I have a new reference tool to help me connect with my clients. There are poems/lyrics in this book that can be utilized to help children and adults feel that they are not alone with their problems and give them hope for a new tomorrow. Aaron does a great job of letting his spirit shine through his words and I cannot wait for Volume II!!

I know it's not that popular anymore;I know I may be shown the door,But I submit this book of poetryFor the whole world to see.I am a very simple man;I try to do the best that I can.My skill level is not that high;I do what I do to get by.We all try to change the world;Sometimes we don't know where we're hurled. But wherever that place will be;No one can take these words away from me.We live in an age that is very fast-paced;We all need to slow down-yes, the whole human race.If this book can help you change your mind,Then the rest of the world won't be far behind.Poems of love and hate, peace and war, and romanceI would like to thank you in advance;Thank you for taking the time to read my words; My deepest wish is that they lift you up to fly with the birds.Aaron Jones was inspired to begin writing poetry through the influence of his brother's band. As the title of the collection suggests, his verse is set the form of song and is intended to be set to music.

I can't believe, I REFUSE to believe, that this book is not in print. Out of all the Doors rehashed drunken Jim tales and bad poetry insights (with a few notable exceptions), this was the best Doors book around. This is where Jim's poetry, prose, attitude and expression developed, improved and kicked rear in the whole world: HIS MUSIC. The lyrics are the best writing of Morrison hands down. I'll take Moonlight Drive or The End or Indian Summer or End Of The Night over anything in that Lords and the New Creatures book anyday! Bring this one back, publishers! NOW!

We have the audio cassette of this and our 5 kids are really interested in it...the video is even better because the words are right on the screen andthere are lots of kids acting out the songs. It is amazing how the kids haven't lost interest in learning German and actually ask to watch over and over again! It's great fun for them and a great way to expose them to the language of their heritage. One of the kids is already asking for the Japanese version as he is learning some in school. Another wants Spanish. AMAZING! Unlike some childrens tapes, I'm not losing my mind from listening to this over & over & over again...!

I've been a Lou Reed fan for about a year now. This book has a lot to do with it. When I heard one of his songs, I thought it was just so beautiful. A person I care about very much let me borrow this book, and told me to read it since I loved that song so much. This book really touched my heart, and I read it the whole thing in one day. I've never read more achingly beautiful poems and lyrics in all my life. No other person has Lou's gift for writing lyrics. This is a wonderful book that made me see life in a totally different way.
