I am doing a paper for my humanities class and using one of Bedros Tourian's poems, "Desires For Armenia" in order to compare/contrast it with Keats "Ode To A Nitengale", though they are really different, Keats being about escapism and Tourian about embracing his nation. He writes about Armenia, unrequited love, death, and there are letters too. I really love his poetry. His poems are beautiful, even in translation, surprising since translating tends to take away from the vibe the poetry may have. They are both in English and Armenian, with commentary on each poem. Of course, the commentary is good for my paper, but I would wish for the poems and letters to have their own book also. This is a wonderful book, especially for those who are into Armenian studies, as I am.
Peace,
Shanda

Bedros Tourian (1851â€"1872) is generally acknowledged as the creator of the modern Western Armenian poetic language. Strongly inspired by the French Romantics, Tourian produced in the last few years before his death a corpus of forty-odd poems. They have been the touchstone and primer for generations of Armenian symbolists, decadents, and revolutionary realists.

Most of Tourian's lyrics address the agony of unrequited love, illness, and the expectancy of death. But they also include visionary flights whose intricacy of language and imagery hark back to the earliest sources of the Armenian tradition.

Tourian's complete lyrics are available here for the first time in English, along with an analysis of his poetics and roots and evocations of the fabulous polyglot metropolis of his birth.
