Don Brewer is a drummer's drummer. He'll be the first to tell you that he does not consider himself a technical sort of drummer, but he exemplifies drumming for the sheer joy of it. In the video he explains his approach to his music by saying, "I take a little bit of what I've got here (pointing to his head), a little bit of what I've got here (pointing to his 'guts'), and then I give it everything I've got here (pointing to his heart)". Don through his association with 70's super group Grand Funk Railroad has been the inspiration for countless numbers of aspiring musicians who followed, myself included, who have spent many many hours trying to capture the power and heart that he puts into his craft. The contents of this video, Don's performance as a featured clinician at the 2000 edition of Modern Drummer Magazine's Drum Festival Weekend, includes such Grand Funk favorites as "Are You Ready", "Footstompin' Music", "Shinin' On", and the anthem "I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home)". Also included is the seldom heard "Mark Say's Alright" that was included on the very popular "Grand Funk Live" double album, released in November of 1970 and Don's tutorial on the drum introduction to the song "We're An American Band". This song was the bands first ever number 1 single, and was written by none other than Don Brewer. Fans and others familiar with Grand Funk Railroad know that no Don Brewer drum feature could possibly be complete without his signature solo piece, T.N.U.C. which showcases his ability to play multi-limbed triplets at warp speed. If you're a fan of Grand Funk Railroad, you'll enjoy this video. If you're a drummer, or an aspiring drummer, this video will inspire you and remind you of why you took up your craft in the first place. Surprising as it may seem this video is the only commercially available product exclusively featuring the music of Grand Funk Railroad and Don Brewer. It's the next best thing to seeing Don and the band perform live on their current 2001-2002 tour (which I also heartily recommend).
