(More customer reviews)In this sequel to Song of the Dragon, Drakis has now reached the far north, perhaps out of reach of the elven Rhonas Empire. But, instead of finding answers, he seems to be finding more questions. And worse, this is no safe haven for Drakis and his followers. Now, they need to find their way back south to something like "home."
But also, this is the story of Soen Tjen-Rei, the now elven ex-Inquisitor, is still looking for Drakis, in the hopes that he can redeem his position in the Iblisi. But, following the pilgrims who seek Drakis that he might lead them to freedom from the Rhonas Empire, he begins to lose his focus. What should he do, and what path should he follow? Things seem much less clear than before.
First off, I must say that I loved Song of the Dragon, and was very happy to get the second book in the series. I disagree that this book stands entirely on its own. If you don't read the first book, you will lack a key understanding of just what Drakis is up to, and the ending will feel very muddy and unsatisfying. So, am I telling you to not read the book? Heavens no, I am telling you to read BOTH books! So far this is a great series, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
I like its interesting races, with the humans and dwarves being just what you would expect, but the elves being excitingly different. And, I really like the lion-man manticores and the four-armed chimerians. The story itself has lots of great action, with interesting monsters (especially the drakoneti and dragons) and great fight scenes.
If you liked Song of the Dragon, then you WILL like this book. I highly recommend this wonderful series to all fans of great fantasy literature!
