Somewhere between the feverish, crazed ravings of a lunatic and the crystal-clear testimony of the last surviving witness to the apocalypse, like fronds of a sacred tree, the last tree on Earth, Edward Ka-Spel's words will remind you of everything we have to lose in our mad dash towards madness itself. And there is great beauty in that descent, much for which to be grateful, much worth remembering. In the darkness, Ka-Spel's light makes all objects glow.
I first got to know Ka-Spel through the music of the Legendary Pink Dots, the Tear Garden, and other experimental musical projects to which he lent his voice, lyrics and compositional depth. Together with his band mates he's woven a tapestry of interconnected narrative moments. It's a pervasive discography, scattered and often hard to collect. I'm grateful for this lovingly printed and bound book, bringing so many favorite moments together.
You don't have to be a fan to enjoy it. The poetry stands on its own, richly evocative and visual. The mythos is complete and utterly satisfying in its scope; total and yet obscure; glimpses through a dark fog of entire stretches of history yet to be written.
If you've enjoyed this book as much as I have, I recommend trying to see the Legendary Pink Dots in concert. They're a very hard-working band, willing to travel anywhere people would want to see and hear them, always putting art above any financial gain. And also such lovely, generous people. It's with great dignity and honor that I share my final days on Earth with them. Sing while you may! It won't be for very long...
