(More customer reviews)Despite its publication date (1979) and occasional errors in data, this is still one of the most important reference books for the poetry of the trouveres, the medieval French poet-composers. It catalogues all of the trouvere lyrics, organized alphabetically by composer and then by title. Besides title and composer, the information for each entry includes concordances (the same lyric in different manuscript sources), position in manuscripts, and a limited list of modern transcriptions. It builds on the earlier work of Gustave Raynaud, whose Bibliographie des chansonniers francais,(Paris, 1884) catalogued the extant lyrics alphabetically by rhyming word. Raynaud's catalogue was updated by Hans Spanke in his G. Raynauds Bibliographie des altfranzösischen Liedes (Brill Archive, 1980).
Besides the catalogue, the book contains a detailed bibliography of the trouvere reportoire including manuscripts, editions, and secondary works, complete to about 1975 (the catalogue was published in 1979), and a cross-index to the numbers assigned in the Raynaud catalogue.
The upcoming Thematic Catalogue of Troubadour and Trouvere Melodies (Pendragon Press, 2011), of which I am secondary author, relies heavily on the Linker catalogue for uniform title and attributions, while correcting data errors in the Linker catalogue.
