For the operaholics among us (I am one) "Fortissimo" is an entertaining and interesting look at what goes on backstage at the opera. Author Murray was given unprecedented access to Lyric Opera of Chicago's Opera Center for American Artists during the 2003-2004 season. This is Lyric Opera's training ground for young artists. Murray follows this group of twelve singers through coaching sessions, rehearsals, auditions and performances to give the reader a close-hand look at the rigorous intensity of this most glorious art form. Interspersed with this are chapthers which fill out the picture of what it takes to succeed in opera. There is a chapter devoted to the comprimario - singers who specialize in secondary characters. Another chapter is devoted to Pavarotti, a warning of what can happen when one achieves what Murray dubs 'sacred monster' status. A sacred monster, superstar, Pavarotti was undone at the end of his career by his enormous ego. This book is a wonderful gift for those opera lovers on your Christmas list this season.

H. L. Mencken declared that "the opera is to music what a bawdy house is to a cathedral." It was not meant as a compliment, but to William Murray, former New Yorker staff writer and aspiring opera singer, a bawdy house is an apt metaphor for the opera: a place of confusion, high and low drama, fleshly pleasures and raucous song.In Fortissimo, Murray follows twelve young singers in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's training program, the prestigious Opera Center for American Artists, through the 2003–2004 season. In the course of the year, these singers attend countless coaching sessions, inspiring master classes, nerve-racking auditions and grueling rehearsals—and finally perform with some of the most celebrated names (and spectacular egos) in opera, from Samuel Ramey to José Cura and Natalie Dessay. While chronicling their progress, Murray offers an insider's look at the different aspects of the opera world that influence a young singer's success, a world filled with temperamental maestros, ambitious directors, old-world tradition and sacred monsters. Weaving recollections of his own days training in New York, Rome and Milan in the 1950s with the personal and artistic struggles of the young singers in Chicago today, Murray lays bare the staggering ambition and relentless will required to achieve a career in the arts. As he writes, "Becoming a successful opera singer—stepping out on a huge stage to try to fill the house with your voice, to bring an audience of thirty-six hundred people to its feet—is as risky in its own peculiar way as embarking on a career as a matador. You can triumph, you can struggle to survive or you can perish from your wounds." Fortissimo is a delicious tale of rising talents, angst and heartache and small triumphs, and the music that inspires it all.

Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?: A Rock 'n' Roll Memoir Review

Does the Noise in My Head Bother You: A Rock 'n' Roll Memoir
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
371 pages of text, 3 page "Semiprologue", 32 pages of color and b&w photos throughout Tyler's life. Take the dust jacket off and there are wrap-around photos of Tyler in full regalia and mic stand. The inside front and back pages have the same series of photos.
In a nutshell-if you like Steven Tyler/AEROSMITH (originally spelled ARROWSMITH for about 5 seconds-Tyler wanted HOOKERS, but changed the spelling to A-E-R-O) you'll like this book. With the help of David Dalton, a long time Rolling Stone Magazine contributor, Tyler tells his tale in much the same style as he would in a conversation. His comments are sometimes off the wall and colorful, but somehow seem to help tell his life story. A quick glance at the chapter headings will prove my point. But Tyler writes in a very straightforward, in your face, no-holds barred style. Throughout the book Tyler constantly lays things out, no matter the subject matter, which helps paint a better, fuller picture of both his music, and himself.
Beginning with his birth, we learn about his parents and their strong influence on his adult outlook , his early formative years, friends and acquaintances, and his discovery of music. There's a lot of background details that help fill in Tyler's early life-a boyhood in many respects like other kids of the era, and how he found his way to music, and his decision to make music his life. Tyler talks about the comparisons between Mick Jagger and himself, and how the press played up their similarities. But Tyler makes no bones about Jagger/The Stones-he idolized them, along with other r'n'r stars of the day. We also learn about the many personal and band escapades-involving sex/drugs/r'n'r during the many years when the band was touring hard-and partying just as hard. If you've ever wondered about the highs and lows of a r'n'r band, this portion of the book will give you a good look into what it's all about. But Tyler tells his story with both great insight and humor, using that Tyler way with words, and that peculiar turn of a phrase that never seems to fail him.
For fans of the band, the book gets really interesting when the original band (with guitarist Ray Tabano), decided to try and "make it", by moving to Boston. This portion of the book really has the flavor of AEROSMITH-the song choices, the small clubs, trying to get by, and the beginning of their recording career, and the recording of various albums, and Tyler's on-going feud with guitarist Joe Perry The many details are what make this book worth reading-all the trials and tribulations that Tyler and the band went through in order to make music, and persevere in the music business.
Tyler also talks about his family-especially his four children. This is where he opens himself up and shows that underneath all that bravado, he's a caring, sensitive man. Tyler also talks about his stints in rehab, and the many physical maladies that have plagued him for a number of years, a number of which were caused by his r'n'r lifestyle. The book is also a cautionary tale of how excess can lead to ruin-his marriages and divorces, his troubles with his band mates, his regrets when looking back at parts of his life when the conflict of home life and his band made life almost intolerable, and so on. But in the end, Tyler (now a judge on American Idol) has adjusted to his sixth decade, living in Laurel Canyon, where many of his idols once lived, able to look back at a lifetime of music making.
For anyone who wonders if Steven Tyler is for real-this book will amply prove that point. His jive-talking, flavorful, sometimes off-color word usage, sometimes semi-nonsense style of writing keeps the interest up throughout this book. At times you get the feeling that Tyler is telling you his tales one on one, which is very effective, and sometimes visceral, but always interesting. The combination of small details throughout gives added depth to his story. It's an honest (as he sees it) look at a man, his music, his life in and outside of music, and how they all intertwine. And for all the jive bravado, you get the feeling, that underneath is someone who wants to let people know that, in many respects, he's just like us-an example-the book is dedicated to his mother. If you've ever wondered (as I have) if the persona he throws out is all there is, this book will help you see past all that. You may be surprised.
If you're interested in the other side of the r'n'r coin, so to speak, check out the book "And On Piano Nicky Hopkins: The Extraordinary Life of Rock's Greatest Session Man". As much as Tyler ultimately "made it" in music, Hopkins story (truly perhaps the greatest session man in r'n'r) is altogether something different. This book is a window into the r'n'r lifestyle of a man few could match.

"I've been mythicized, Mick-icized, eulogized and fooligized, I've been Cole-Portered and farmer's-daughtered, I've been Led Zepped and 12-stepped. I'm a rhyming fool and so cool that me, Fritz the Cat, and Mohair Sam are the baddest cats that am. I have so many outrageous stories, too many, and I'm gonna tell 'em all. All the unexpurgated, brain-jangling tales of debauchery, sex & drugs, transcendence & chemical dependence you will ever want to hear."

The son of a classical pianist straight out of the Bronx of old Archie comics, Steven Tyler was born to be a rock star. Weaned on Cole Porter, Nat King Cole, Mick-and his beloved Janis Joplin-Tyler began tearing up the streets and the stage as a teenager before finally meeting his "mutant twin" and legendary partner Joe Perry. In this addictively readable memoir, told in the playful, poetic voice that is uniquely his own, Tyler unabashedly recounts the meteoric rise, fall, and rise of Aerosmith over the last three decades and riffs on the music that gives it all meaning.

Tyler tells what it's like to be a living legend and the frontman of one of the world's most revered and infamous bands-the debauchery, the money, the notoriety, the fights, the motels and hotels, the elevators, limos, buses and jets, the rehab. He reveals the spiritual side that "gets lost behind the stereotype of the Sex Guy, the Drug Guy, the Demon of Screamin', the Terror of the Tropicana." And he talks about his epic romantic life and his relationship with his four children. As dazzling, bold, and out-on-the-edge as the man himself, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You? is an all-access backstage pass into this extraordinary showman's life.

C'mon! A chorus Line is THE best musical ever written! Now you can have the chance to own a wonderfully published script to this amazing music. I also suggest buying the cd to the musical to go with the script. It's just a pity that this script can not encapsulate the performances of the original cast as well. But I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. But you can buy this script... and for a severely discounted price!...Congratulations. Jump at this deal immediately.

It is hard to believe that over 25 years have passed since A Chorus Line first electrified a New York audience. The memories of the show's birth in 1975, not to mention those of its 15-year-life and poignant death, remain incandescent - and not just because nothing so exciting has happened to the American musical since. For a generation of theater people and theatergoers, A Chorus Line was and is the touchstone that defines the glittering promise, more often realized in lengend than in reality, of the Broadway way. This impressive book contains the complete book and lyrics of one of the longest running shows in Broadway history with a preface by Samuel Freedman, an introduction by Frank Rich and lots of photos from the stage production.

Shaker Songs: A Musical Celebration of Peace, Harmony and Simplicity Review

Shaker Songs: A Musical Celebration of Peace, Harmony and Simplicity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Shaker Songs" is a beautifully produced, meticulously researched, and creatively conceived volume that combines the most appealing aspects of musical collection, descriptive text, and artwork.
As you'd expect from the curator of Hancock Shaker Village, the body of work as a collection of Shaker music is informative, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Short textual introductions give context and insight into how these selections fit into the greater body of Shaker music and society generally. It's all very nicely crafted, but this is to be expected, in such a volume. The CD, touched by the genius of the great Joel Cohen, is a recording to be cherished, and a delightful extra-special added bonus that brings this volume to a new level. But again, this is all to be expected in a book about Shaker music with this pedigree.
The real surprise in this book is the extraordinary quality of the artwork that decorates its pages. These are some of the best reproductions of Shaker photographs, gift drawings, and various other pieces, that I've seen published. So, when you're not using this book to learn about Shaker music, it is a perfect art object, for just a quick look at something beautiful and Shaker, when you have a spare moment. It's relatively small, as coffee-table books go, so it's easy to handle.
I'd say, whether you're a Shaker music buff or just a general Shaker buff, I think that you'll find this book to be a delight, through and through. I received it as a gift, and truly, in this price range, I can think of no better gift for a Shaker enthusiast.
--Jonathan Feist, living in the Harvard Shaker Meetinghouse

'Tis the gift to be simple, and the United Society of Believers, or Shakers, bestow this gift upon us in Shaker Songs, a compendium of radiant, heart-rousing hymns that comes with a beautiful full-length CD. Over the last 200 years, Shaker congregations have been wellsprings of remarkable creativity in many branches of human endeavor, including religion, architecture, agriculture, industry, art, social welfare, education, and, of course, music. Music has long played a central role in Shaker worship--from the early songs that expressed pure, wordless feeling, to the later hymns and anthems, which reflected some of the musical modes of the day.The Shaker sect was founded in 1774 by Ann Lee, a blacksmith's daughter who emigrated to America from England with a handful of followers. This communal, devout group celebrated their love of God in the stirring dance worship that gave the Shakers their popular name. At their peak in the mid-nineteenth century, the Shakers were the largest and most successful religious collective in existence. Some communities lasted for more than 150 years, others for only a few, and one, at Sabbathday Lake, Maine, still exists today. Because of the Shakers' longstanding commitment to the documentation of their songs, their musical tradition is very much alive and well. The Shakers at Sabbathday Lake--who annotated some of the music in this book and can be heard on the accompanying CD--continue to maintain this musical heritage as an important component of their everyday lives.Shaker Songs contains the distillation of more than two centuries of Shaker music and art--their remarkable power and quiet beauty is a testament to the Shaker vision of simplicity, proportion, and harmony.

Pick Yourself Up: Dorothy Fields and the American Musical (Broadway Legacies)

This book tells us very little about the person Dorothy Fields - her thoughts and feelings, her methods of working,& most of her private life is usually tossed off in a few sentences at best. After reading this book, I had very little idea about her as an actual human being. Worse yet, Dorothy Fields WAS A LYRICIST! And a great one! And yet there are very few of her lyrics presented here to illustrate just how good she was! The book will be in a discussion of some of her shows and songs, and the reader is left aching to actually see the lyrics she wrote. This book is a major disappointment.

Although writing music is actually too ephemeral to break down scientifically, Jason Blume is generous in sharing what has worked and NOT worked for him - and he sets a good example for aspiring professional songwriters. I especially appreciated that HALF the book is about the BUSINESS of songwriting - what's necessary to get songs recorded and released - the networking and just plain LUCK that go into "the deal"! I remember Jason's early songs from his first years in LA, and he HAS come a long way and is living proof that his methods work!

The Beatles: Complete Scores Review

The Beatles: Complete Scores
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an amazingly complete and accurate collection... musicians attempting to learn and to replicate the Beatles sound will not be disappointed. Included are all instrument parts, all vocal parts, and chord names above the staff, with tablature for the bass and guitar parts. What a bargain!
At times, the authors were able to capture some subtlties in the music which had gone unnoticed by me... but a careful re-listening to the song revealed the score to be surprisingly correct.
Regarding some of the complaints in other Amazon reviews, which made me a bit hesitant to buy:
1) Size of the print: it really is not that small, and it is quite legible.
2) Supposed inaccuracy of chord names: it appears that there is a general chord name above the staff, but more detailed guitar-part scoring in the staff... they were not trying to name the exact chord every time... in some cases not every string is being played.
3) Complaints about the inclusion of 'tab' for 'musical illiterates': tab actually includes, concisely, information which standard notation cannot show easily... like exactly which string/fret to use, out of several options on the guitar. And, by the way, Paul McCartney STILL does not read or write standard notation himself.
NOTE: I also compared this book to Hal Leonard's "The Beatles" (21 songs, in their "Transcribed Scores" series), and was amazed how much better The Beatles Complete Scores is.

The Anthology of Rap Review

The Anthology of Rap
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unfortunately, I bought this book before I read the article by Slate magazine (available to read online, the article is called "Fact-Check the Rhyme") which mentions that there are lots of mistakes in the transcriptions and goes through a number of big ones which jumped out at the writer. These mistakes range from getting names wrong, to not understanding the slang being used, to simply getting certain words wrong.
The mistakes listed there are the EXACT same mistakes in the online site - "Original Hip Hop Lyric Archive" which has been going for years and is riddled with mistakes as it relies on listeners to add lyrics.
Having exactly the same mistakes suggests that the transcriptions for the Anthology were pulled directly from that site, mistakes and all.
In the comments to the Slate article, one of the editors of the book admits there are loads of mistakes in the Anthology and suggests that later print runs of the book will be more accurate, after readers have sent in corrections and it has been updated. So I guess early buyers like me will be guinea pigs, owning a pretty expensive book full of errors lifted from the internet, while later readers will benefit when the "correct version" is finally available.
One of the reasons I ordered the official, Yale anthology is because I thought it would be scrupulously checked, otherwise I could have stuck to reading the lyrics on the internet at that archive. You might expect a very small number of minor mistakes, but not loads of glaringly obvious ones which change the meaning of the lyrics.
I did not expect it to just be a printed-out version of the erroneous online stuff.
Seeing as this anthology will most likely be used on courses, studying HipHop prose, then it's sad that in a lot of cases students will be studying mis-transcribed lyrics.
It's a slight to the rappers in many cases (albeit unintentionally) because they've used clever references or devices of language which have been rendered as just random gibberish.
This reflects badly on Yale, as they have an academic standard to adhere to. The anthology lists a long line of people on their rap "advisory board," though it seems none of them knew enough about HipHop or cared enough to check over the Anthology to correct the many obvious mistakes in the text.
It's best to wait until they bring out a thoroughly corrected version of this, as you don't want to be stuck with this version with all the mistakes from the internet in it.

Bibliography Old French Lyrics Review

Bibliography Old French Lyrics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite its publication date (1979) and occasional errors in data, this is still one of the most important reference books for the poetry of the trouveres, the medieval French poet-composers. It catalogues all of the trouvere lyrics, organized alphabetically by composer and then by title. Besides title and composer, the information for each entry includes concordances (the same lyric in different manuscript sources), position in manuscripts, and a limited list of modern transcriptions. It builds on the earlier work of Gustave Raynaud, whose Bibliographie des chansonniers francais,(Paris, 1884) catalogued the extant lyrics alphabetically by rhyming word. Raynaud's catalogue was updated by Hans Spanke in his G. Raynauds Bibliographie des altfranzösischen Liedes (Brill Archive, 1980).
Besides the catalogue, the book contains a detailed bibliography of the trouvere reportoire including manuscripts, editions, and secondary works, complete to about 1975 (the catalogue was published in 1979), and a cross-index to the numbers assigned in the Raynaud catalogue.
The upcoming Thematic Catalogue of Troubadour and Trouvere Melodies (Pendragon Press, 2011), of which I am secondary author, relies heavily on the Linker catalogue for uniform title and attributions, while correcting data errors in the Linker catalogue.

This book charts the progress of the piano and related instruments during the lifetimes of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Wherever possible the author returns to the original sources--a wide variety of previously unreported documents, as well as surviving instruments--to reconstruct the history of the pianoforte that radically departs from earlier theories of many of the most fundamental issues. A wide range of instruments, each carefully described, is placed in a precise chronological and cultural setting. New insights are offered into the parameters that governed the performance of keyboard music in the Classical Era.
