From my perspective, it is the best book on the market today for people looking for an understanding of how Caribbean culture created one of the most distinctive musical genres of the twentieth century. What makes it superior is Foehr's ability to draw from decades of first-hand knowledge of his topic. He is not an anthropological field worker but a deep insider who works with the care and sophistication of the best anthropologists and musicologists. Add to this, however, that he is not an academic who is distanced from his subject by abstractions or a journalist on an assignment. He is close to the soul, and if you admire Jamaica and its culture, you will feel at home in the world depicted in this book.
