This is parts and scores of three quite different works bound together. Terry Riley's "Sunrise of the Dream Collector" is minimalist, very busy, with complex rhythms but not otherwise technically demanding. Passages are improvisational or aleatoric in the sense that a player must choose between alternatives. Hamza El Din's "Escalay" is a Nubian oud solo adapted by Tohru Ueda for string quartet. The notation is awkward in spots; I would guess that the players are expected more to go for the feeling of North African music than to try to count precisely. Vrebalov's "Pannonia Boundless" is inspired by Serbian and Gypsy traditions. It has pungent harmonies, extravagant cadenzas, and a generally non-Western sound. As performed (very effectively) by the Voxare Quartet, it calls for violent and extreme bowing. These are attractive works for players with great chops, skill in improvisation, or at least an improvisational style, and the courage to explore.
