I own both SampleTank 2.5 and Kontakt Elements, as well as Miroslav Philharmonic. SampleTank stands out as having the least fidelity in its instruments. Somehow, to my ear, they sound oddly dead, and often unrealistic. To the contrary, IK Multimedias' Miroslav Philharmonic is a dream to the ears. I can only guess that the samples in Sample Tank 2.5 have not been updated in a while, and weren't recorded to exacting enough standards in the first place. The samples in Miroslav Philharmonic are rather old, but they sparkle and shine in an emotive way that has made them a mainstay of orchestral sampling since their release. The difference in the sound of these 2 IK Multimedia products is startling, to say the least.
As far as an overall sampler, I would recommend Native Instruments Kontakt. I recently bought Komplete Elements and was stunned at the superiority of the sound of the samples of Kontakt, as compared to SampleTank samples. I am now planning on buying NI Komplete Full, as the price for it is not much higher than the price for Kontakt alone.
Hope that Helps.
